Loughrigg Fell is one of the smaller fells (~362m) in the Lake District, adjacent to Ambleside and Grasmere. The size of the fell made it perfect for my first fell summit. Rydal Water and Cave are also nearby, which I’ve visited before and planned on finishing the walk there, which turned out to be a good idea on this particular day.
We picked a very rare day in the UK to do this when the temperature was 30c!. This was a hot walk up the fell, although I’d expect it’s an easier walk on a more typical Uk day.

There are a few car parks on the A591, which can be used to access Loughrigg Fell and Rydal water/caves. The first is White Moss car park which tends to be very busy on each visit I’ve made so I tend to park further up the road at Rydal Water car park. It’s not the cheapest car park by any stretch, at £2 per hour when I visited, but there are few other options. For this visit, I paid by the phone app/website so I could extend my stay if needed.
The walk itself wasn’t especially difficult, even with my camera, 70-200mm lens, and tripod, however, the heat did add complexity and I vastly underestimated how much water I’d need (lesson learned for next time).
Once we’d summited the fell, it was a fairly pleasant walk back to Rydal Water across some grasslands with the ferns in full growth at the time of year.
There are several different walking routes so I’d suggest checking these out before setting off. I saved the route on my phone but, from recollection, I had phone coverage throughout the walk. This is similar to the walk we did, however, we included Rydal water as well:
